text Z Zonta International is an international and Non-Government organization which serves for the public charity.  Its aim is to enhance the women's statuses in the society, regarding the laws, politics, economics, and occupations. The organization's members comprise of women in the management sector in various occupations who possess the leadership and the public mind within them. Zonta International was also given the distinct honor from the United Nations to be the consultant for UNICEF, ECOSOC, UNESCO, ILO, and the Council of Europe. Zonta International currently has 35,000 members worldwide, all of which come from 1,200 Zonta Clubs in 67 different countries.


    The name “Zonta” derived from the Sioux Indian tribe language, meaning honesty and reliability. The Zonta members are called “Zontian”.


    The organization’s logo consists of various symbols, all of which indicate the same thing, “united for one goal”.

    Zonta International was founded on November 8, 1919 in Buffalo, New York, United States of America. The membership was accepted through invitation to those considered to have the potentiality of a leader, those who receive the chance from society to form their careers or had worked for the government and was successful in their lives. They deemed it’s time to start devoting themselves to the society and hence, had gotten together with the aim to contribute to the public interests.


    The management of the organization was divided into “Districts”, which comprise of “Areas”, which consist of different “Clubs”. The management in each club is in accordance with the Zonta International’s rules and regulations, meaning that the main responsibilities lie on the Club’s President, the President-elect, the Vice-President, the Treasurer, the Secretary and the Heads of various sectors.


    There are currently 14 Zonta Clubs in Thailand, all of which are categorized in the District 6, Area 17. The clubs in their respective order of establishment are as follows: Zonta Bangkok 1, Zonta Bangkok 2, Zonta Bangkok 3, Zonta Khon Kaen, Zonta Bangkok 4, Zonta Bangkok 5, Zonta Bangkok 6, Zonta Chiangmai, Zonta Bangkok 7, Zonta Chiangrai, Zonta Phitsanulok, Zonta Ratchaburi, Zonta Bangkok 8, and Zonta Bangkok 9.


Zonta International and other Foundations

Zonta International Foundation

           Zonta International Foundation was founded as a resulted from the meeting’s approval in the year 1984, in Sydney, Australia. The foundation was aimed to manage the funding and other financial supports. The foundation’s management team consists of 9 committees, 2 of which are the International President and the International President-Elect. All funding managed by the foundation are categorized into 4 categories according to the purposes and there are altogether 8 funds.


1“International Service Programs” funded by the “International service fund” – supports the projects regarding public charity for women around the world


2“International Strategies to Prevent Violence against Women” funded by the “ZISVAW FUND” – It was founded in the year 1998 with the aim to support the projects set up to stop the violence against women and children. Any Zonta Clubs worldwide setting up a project to stop violence against women and children are eligible to ask for financial supports.


3 “Educational, Leadership and Youth Development” funded by the “Amelia Earhart Fellowship Fund” – Amelia Earhart was an outstanding Zontian, and was the first female pilot to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean and was also the first who flew from the western sea to the eastern sea of America in one single flight. She had made and held many records regarding flight before she disappeared with her airplane in an attempt to fly around the world after the World War II. In honor of her name, and to commemorate her outstanding skills and courage, Zonta International founded the Amelia Earhart Fellowship Fund in the year 1938. The fund was to award scholarships to women studying a Doctoral Degree in the Space Science and the Space Engineering fields or other fields related. Each year, 35 scholarships are given, supporting the receiver in the amount of 10,000 dollars. Those who are interested in asking for the scholarship must submit an application form and other required documents to Zonta International within November 15 of each year. So far, there have been 3 students from Thailand who received the scholarship.


4“Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship Fund” – Jane M. Klausman was a highly successful Zontian. She started off as a secretary before conducting her own career. She indicated in her will, giving funds to Zonta International for it to support women studying the Bachelor’s Degree in Business fields. This fund was founded in the year 1997, awarding 5 scholarships annually, 5000 dollars each. Those who are interested must submit an application form and other required documents to the District Governor within June 1, of each year.


5“Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Fund” – This fund was founded in the year 1990 to support women in their Pre-Bachelor’s Degree education. The aimed targets are those who show outstanding leadership and want to devote themselves for public interests. This fund supports the funding in 2 levels; the District level and the International level, with the amount awarded of 500 dollars and 1000 dollars respectively. Those who are interested in asking for the supports must submit an application form and other required documents to the District Governor within April 1, of each year.


6“Zonta International Operations” funded by the “Rose Fund” – This fund supports the management and financial arrangements of Zonta International Foundation, along with giving financial supports to clubs in case of a funding shortage from the responsible funding sources.


7“World Headquarters Property Preservation & Improvement (WHPPI) Fund” - Zonta International Foundation bought the building in which was developed into the Zonta International Headquarter in the year 1986. But because it was an old building, further repairing was required. Therefore, The WHPPI Fund was founded to support the cost of repairing and innovation, including the maintenance.


8“Endowment Fund” – This fund was founded in the year 1988 with the policy allowing Zonta International Foundation to make use of only the profits incurred from the funds management to support other activities or the particular activity according to the donator’s intention. The original value of the donated money is to be kept the same.
